9. Crash Landing on You

Crash Landing on You Season 2: Netflix Release Date, Cast, Plot, And More Update! - Best Toppers

The love story of two people, one from North Korea and the other South Korean is common. However what would happen if they were both citizens of enemy countries? Such relationships do not exist as it’s forbidden to be in a relationship with someone who belongs to another country on opposing sides.

Crash Landing On You features an unfortunate love story between these two actors that belong to each side of this war-torn region; Yoon Se Ri crashed into the arms (and heart)of series lead actor Jeong Hyeok after falling through many unlucky events while he was standing by his family restaurant in the North Korean border city of Nampo.

She was on her way to cross into South Korea without any proper identification papers when she ran right into him and fell in love at first sight. It may have been Fate or Destiny that brought them together, but their relationship would not be allowed by circumstances beyond their control.

11. Fight For My Way

This is easily my favorite romcom Kdrama series of all time. This kdrama is so refreshing because they finally move away from the theme of a chaebol (loosely translates to a ridiculously rich person) rescuing a poor person (usually the woman is poor). It’s about a group of friends in their late 20s struggling to achieve their dreams and supporting each other in the process. Chae Ae Ra (played by Kim Ji Won) and Go Dong Man (played by Park Seo Joon) are the main romantic characters.

They grew up together as best friends and watching them evolve into lovers was so good. Dong Man is a loveable kind dummy who is training to be an MMA fighter after a 10 hiatus. Ae Ra is fiercely loyal and strong-willed who dreams of becoming an announcer and needs to overcome many obstacles.

She keeps getting shit thrown at her but always manages to recover and keep going. I love that she takes a moment to cry it out, gets over what happened, and keeps going. My favorite line from Ae Ra is “I just stepped in shit, it’s not a big deal” as she’s crying when something bad happened to her. This show didn’t do as well as other romantic comedy kdrama but is a definite must-watch for all rom-com fans. Something a little bit more relatable and they are helping themselves instead of being rescued by a knight. You will fall off your couch with laughter and it will leave you smiling.

Available on Viki

12. My Roommate is a Gumiho

How can I forget about my favorite Dongsheng? The handsome, sexy, and talented Jang Ki Yong plays the 999-year-old nine-tailed fox, Shin Woo Yeo (spelled backward translates to “Fox god”). I also love love LOVE Hyeri, who plays a quirky university student, Lee Dam, and I fell in love with her when she played Deoksooni in Reply 1988.

Because of the two leads, I was so excited when this came out and it did not disappoint. Again with the amazing side characters, Hye Sun (Kang Ha Na), Jae Jin (Kim Do-Wan), and Soo Kyung (Park Kyung Hye) who will have you wishing you can hit up a pojangmacha (I like to translate this to “soju tent”) with them. It was refreshing to see Kang Ha Na play someone who cares for other people and finally gets the guy. I’ve only seen her in Just Between Lovers and Start-Up and in both roles, she was uptight and cold.

The great thing about this show is how pro-woman it is. Dam always stands up for herself against an aggressive senior, Sun Woo (Bae In Hyuk) who has a crush on her. She makes it clear that she does not want to be touched by him and stands up to a group of incels who made a bet for Sun Woo to date her. In the end, she is the one who saves Woo Yeo, who saved her multiple times before. This feminist vibe is exactly what the Kdrama world needs and you can catch this show on Viki.

13. Because This Is My First Life

This show is a lot slower-paced than the others but still fantastic. My favorite part is the friendship between Ji Ho (Jung So Min), Su Ji (Esom), and Ho Rang (Kim Ga Eun). Everyone needs a solid friendship like this. All three characters are so different. Ji Ho is a quiet and passionate writer. She initially comes off as someone who is passive and polite on the outside but she is not afraid to be straightforward with everyone.

She comes across a stump and decides to give up on becoming a drama writer because of an asshole who tried to rape her and the people who tried to cover it up. She eventually overcomes it with the help of a mysterious female CEO of a production company. The strong female relationships made this show so great. The couple with a real break up, the girl who is afraid of commitment, and the weird couple who make their relationship clear in writing are the stories of the three main couples.

I rewatched the hot kissing scene by the ocean with Ji Ho and Se Hee (Lee Min-Ki) many times. There was so much build-up to that first kiss and deserves to be watched more than once! And of course, one of my favorite dongsaengs, Kim Min Kyu, and his dimples made an appearance for a few episodes which made the show all the better. If you want to watch a funny show with a strong female friendship, this is your show.

Available on Netflix and Viki

14. Mr. Queen

Mr. Queen

This show is absolutely amazing and hilarious. It’s about a famous Chef Jang Bong Hwang (Choi Jin Hyuk) who falls into a pool and when he wakes up he’s in a woman’s body in the 1800s Joseon. Not just any woman, but Queen Kim So Young (Shin Hye Sun). I was actually hesitant to watch this show because I did not like Shin Hye Sun. I’ve only ever seen her in roles where she plays the petty selfish jerk like her roles in Stranger and Legend of the Blue Sea. When I watched her acting like a man while wearing a ladies hanbok with her super delicate feminine features, my opinion of her quickly changed. I realized how talented she really is and I hope to see her in more main roles. This show has everything, the hilarious comedy, the usual palace politics and scheming surprises, the dramatic scenes, and of course the romance that develops between King Cheol Jung (Kim Jung Hyun) and Queen Kim So Young. You can catch this historical drama-comedy gem on Viki.
