Taeyang is a South Korean singer and actor. He is a one of a BIG BANG members, the winner of all three major Korean music awards (Mnet Asian Music Awards Best Male Group Award, Golden Disc Awards Album Award – Digital Singles Category; Seoul Music Awards Daesang Prize) and holds an honorary title as “King of KPOP”.
Taeyang has been involved in philanthropy and volunteers for UNICEF since 2010 with his fellow group members G-Dragon, T.O.P., Daesung since their debut. Today we are taking a look at this K-Pop mega star and see what his life has been like till now.
Taeyang was born in Seoul, South Korea on 18th May 1988. Taeyang attended Baekseok Elementary School and later moved to Jasan Middle school where he studied for three years before moving to Jungwon Highschool, from which he graduated with a diploma degree. He then went on to study Digital Media at the Dongshin University.
His parents are both teachers at an elementary school near Seoul. At age five he moved to Seongnam with his family due to their father’s new job as a professor there; they stayed until 1996 when they went back to live in Daegu after the first semester of sixth grade because it was closer to Taeyang’s grandmother who looked after him while his parents were busy working.
He’s been passionate about music since childhood; first getting into singing after being influenced by his father who is also an avid singer. As a child, Taeyang loved listening to the radio as well as watching KBS’ national television performance show “National Singing Contest”. This inspired him to make up his mind and choose singing as his career path.
Taeyang then began training at JYP Entertainment, which was also the company that his father had trained with before him. After releasing “Hot” in 2003, Taeyang went on to release two more albums; one of them being an EP entitled “SOLAR.” He is currently working with YG Entertainment as its first artist from Big Bang to go into acting following the success of MBC’s variety show We Got Married, in which Taeyang was paired with actress Min Hyo-rin.
In 2008 he released his first solo album “Solar” and collaborated with Gummy for the single “I Need a Girl.” The album sold over one million copies worldwide. He also had his debut as an actor on MBC’s We Got Married before releasing another eponymous EP, this time entitled “RISE”, in 2009. His third studio album is titled Hot: Second Round and was released digitally on September 30th 2010; it will be followed up by physical releases October 12th 2010.
In 2011, Taeyang released his second album, “Solar Eclipse.” He is a member of the Korean boy band BIGBANG.
2012 was a year of collaboration for Taeyang. He collaborated with YG’s newest act Psy for “Hands Up,” a track from the album PSY Five, and released his second EP The Gifted. The following year Taeyang released his third EP, “Rise.”
Taeyang also collaborated with G-Dragon in 2013 again for the Rise/Heartbreaker single that was included in both their albums.
Taeyang has appeared on various Korean TV shows including Mask Best Singer and We Got Married as well as had a lead role in MBC drama White Christmas.
He also participated in writing lyrics to songs such as “I Need A Girl” or “Someone Else”.
On February 12th 2015 he will release his first full-length solo album called SOLAR. The title track of this album is put together by Teddy Riley and it’s inspired from 80s soul music mixed with dance pop sound. With new EDM vibes the album is expected to grab the attention of many K-pop fans.
Awards and Achievements
Taeyang has won many awards including Artist Of The Year for two consecutive years (2009–2010) from Melon Music Awards and Golden Disk Award respectively. As well as this he has also won the award for Best Male Solo Artist in 2012 from Melon Music Awards.
Taeyang is known as one of the most talented artists in Big Bang and has released many hits such as “Only Look At Me”, “Ringa Linga”, “I Need A Girl” featuring G-Dragon, “Wedding Dress” with White Tears and more.
He was the first Korean artist to enter Billboard Chart’s Top 16 Singles Sales ranking at number 12 when his second studio album Rise (2010) sold over 100 thousand copies during its release week. He was also ranked 27th on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list in 2010.
His third solo album RISE became a huge success and ranked number one on the Worldwide iTunes album charts and online digital music retailers such as Amazon.
Taeyang has also collaborated with many international artists in various tours and concerts including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyoncé and more where he performed to a sold-out crowd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Taeyang is married to Min Hyo Rin, with whom he has a son named Ten. Taeyang and his wife have known each other since they were in middle school. In an interview for “The Star,” Taeyang said: “I fell for her when I was around 15 years old.” The couple secretly dated from 2008 until their engagement on March 27, 2012. They briefly broke up in 2010 due to the pressure of fame but reconciled at the end of 2011 after Taeyang went through military training as part of South Korea’s mandatory two-year service requirement, which all men between 18-35 are required by law to serve.
Taeyang has a huge legacy in the Korean entertainment industry, Taeyang is a singer who has been in the scene for over 15 years. He has made so much money and done so much for the K-Pop industry. He has had record breaking album sales and streams in South Korea. A lot of young artists look up to him for inspiration too. People even refer to him as the King of KPop.
YG Entertainment first scouted him while they were watching videos of Taeyang performing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller during an audition held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza. Since then Taeyang hasn’t looked back and has been making it big.
