For nearly six decades of marriage, Carl Dean was famously private. While his wife, country legend Dolly Parton, lived in the spotlight, Dean preferred to stay far away from the public eye throughout their 59 years together.
But there was one unforgettable moment when he briefly stepped out of that comfort zone. During a recent conversation with fellow country star Reba McEntire on TalkShopLive, Parton shared the story while promoting her book Star of the Show: My Life on Stage, which highlights memorable moments from her career.
Parton recalled a night at the Kentucky State Fair when Dean unexpectedly joined her on stage. A photo featured in the book shows him standing with backup singer Richard Dennison, sharing a microphone while singing along to Parton’s 1977 hit Higher and Higher. With his arm around the singer, Dean enthusiastically belted out the tune, surprising both the audience and Parton herself.
The country icon admitted she had no idea her husband was even at the fair that night. As the performance began, she noticed something unusual about the background vocals. “I thought, ‘Why are the background singers sounding so off-key?’” she joked. When she turned around, she realized the unexpected singer was her husband, who had simply driven to the event on his own.
Amused by the surprise, Parton decided to play along with the moment. She jokingly leaned toward the stage crew and told them to remove the mysterious man singing behind her. “I said, ‘That guy back there—I don’t know who he is. Get him offstage,’” she laughed.
Parton later admitted she even thought it would be funny if security briefly detained him so she could bail him out after the show. Fortunately for Dean, her road manager stepped in before security could reach him.
The playful moment ended up being the first—and last—time Dean ever joined Parton on stage. As she joked afterward, “No, he never went on stage again, because I wasn’t going to let him.”
Still, the rare story offers a glimpse into the humor and love that defined their long and private marriage. 🎶
