Jeon So-Yeon was born in Seoul, South Korea on August 26, 1998. She studied ballet as a child, and after seeing Big Bang perform, she quit to pursue a musical career. As a child, she was homeschooled for a brief amount of period before enrolling in Kuryong elementary school. She did many auditions about 20-30 but never got selected in any.

Jeon eventually pursued rapping, and after being noticed at the various auditions, she started receiving calls from various places. After letting go of her dreams of becoming a singer, she started dancing again. As she was already a dancer when she was smaller, she picked up dancing really easily and started street dancing. CUBE entertainment held an audition in 2014 at Incheon where jeon went to audition and got selected and finally became a trainee of cube entertainment. Jeon was a representative for Cube Entertainment in season one of Produce 101. She remained a popular contestant during the show’s run and eventually ranked 20th on the last episode.

Jeon competed in the third season of Unpretty Rapstar in 2016. she placed second on the show and gained three songs in the album’s final compilation. And on Dec 29 of 2016, she got an exclusive contract with Cube entertainment and officially debuted on Nov 5th of 2017 with the singles that she wrote herself, “Jelly” and “Idle song’.

On January 11, 2018, it was revealed that Jeon would be re-debuting as the leader and main rapper in Cube Entertainment’s new female group (G)I-DLE. Both their debut single “Latata” and their comeback song “Hann” were favorably appreciated and financially successful, and she is credited with the words, music, and arrangement for both. She also helped write five songs for (G)I-DLE.

Following their debut, Jeon and fellow (G)I-DLE member Miyeon was recruited by Riot Games to form a virtual female group called K/DA alongside American artists Jaira Burns and Madison Beer for the multiplayer online battle arena video game League of Legends. On November 3, K/DA made its formal debut with the song “Pop/Stars” during the 2018 League of Legends World Championship. In 2019, Jeon penned labelmate CLC’s “No,” which was chosen as the lead single after a blind test.

Jeon apologized publicly in March 2019 for using a pirated version of Kontakt, a German music-production program. She posted her apology  in SNS which stated “I deeply regret that I used an illegal copy of the program; as far as I remember, I used it when I first learned songwriting. I had not even recognized that I did not delete the program. But since the day I began composing in earnest, I have only used authorized programs.”

Jeon debuted on Mnet’s new Hip Hop-themed show Do You Know Hip Hop in 2020. The show highlights rappers who rose to prominence in Korea throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s and helped to pioneer the hip hop genre, as well as a guest who has an unwavering passion for hip hop.  On February 28, she performed “2020 Lion remix” for the Old & Young collab with Double K and Nuck as one of the “young rappers.”

She appeared in “The Baddest” and “More” on K/All DA’s Out on August 27, 2020, reprising her role as League of Legends character Akali. Jeon helped produce Namjoo’s solo debut single “Bird,” which was released on September 7.   Jeon, Pentagon’s Hui, and AB6IX’s Lee Dae-hwi said that they will be producing songs for Mnet’s audition show’s Top 7 competition on On December 16.

Jeon is regarded as a multi-talented artist. She got the moniker “Triple Threat” for her achievements as a rapper, singer, and composer. Jeon was dubbed an Alpha girl for putting her authoring, composing, arranging, choreographing, rapping, dancing, and singing skills to use. Jeon’s presence in the group has defined the group’s success from the outset, according to a Cube spokesperson, and has set (G)I-DLE apart from other groups they have presented previously.

Her participation in two survival shows earned her the nickname “survival born monster.” Jeon has mentioned that her bandmates are her songwriting inspiration.
When she was in high school, she was highly affected by her rap teacher, and she began rapping after meeting him. “That incredible mentor taught me the fundamentals, such as how to compose decent songs and how to melt in your sincerity,” Jeon added.
