Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson shared a friendship that lasted for decades, but despite their close bond, the two country legends recorded only one duet together: their beautiful 2016 collaboration, “Lay Me Down.”
The song is a deeply emotional reflection on life, death, and finding peace. Its message became even more meaningful as fans looked back on the special connection between two of country music’s most beloved voices.
In some of their final photos together, Loretta and Willie can be seen sharing the kind of friendship that lasted far beyond the recording studio.
Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter and Willie Nelson’s Son Perform “Lay Me Down”
After Loretta Lynn passed away, her family held a public memorial service at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on October 30, 2022. The emotional tribute was broadcast live by CMT, allowing fans around the world to celebrate Loretta’s extraordinary life and career.
During the memorial, Willie Nelson’s son, Lukas Nelson, joined Loretta’s granddaughter, Emmy Russell, onstage to perform “Lay Me Down.”
Their rendition was incredibly moving, bringing a new generation of Loretta and Willie’s families together through the song they once recorded.
CMT described the performance as “emotional,” and it was easy to understand why. Lukas and Emmy’s voices brought an especially personal feeling to the song, honoring both of their legendary family members.
Their performance later earned a nomination for CMT Performance of the Year at the 2023 CMT Music Awards.
While walking the red carpet for the ceremony, Emmy also shared some of the most meaningful advice she received from her grandmother. Loretta encouraged her to love God and listen for His guidance—advice that Emmy has carried with her throughout her own musical journey.
Emmy Russell Continues Loretta’s Musical Legacy
Emmy Russell later stepped into the spotlight herself as a contestant on Season 22 of American Idol, where she made it all the way to the Top 5.
Although she is proudly carrying on her grandmother’s musical legacy, Emmy is also building an identity of her own as an artist.
Her performance of “Lay Me Down” with Lukas Nelson remains a particularly touching tribute to Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson—a powerful reminder of the friendship, family, and music that connect generations of country artists.
