American Idol judge and legendary singer Lionel Richie has been hospitalized for the second time in a month after experiencing a series of health concerns this year.
A representative for the “Lady” singer confirmed to PEOPLE that Richie recently underwent a medical procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib) and is now recovering.
“Lionel underwent a common procedure for Atrial fibrillation,” his representative said. “The doctor said everything went perfectly.”
The representative added that Richie is doing well but will be taking some time away from performing before returning to the stage.
Atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, is an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. Some people experience symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, or weakness, while others may have no noticeable symptoms.
Lionel Richie Has Faced Health Challenges Throughout the Year
Richie’s latest hospitalization follows several health-related concerns over the past few months.
In June, the singer experienced dizziness while performing in St. Paul, Minnesota. During the concert, he sat down while singing “Dancing on the Ceiling” before performing a few additional songs. However, he ultimately left the stage and the concert ended earlier than planned because he was not feeling well.
Following medical advice, Richie postponed several upcoming performances so he could focus on his health and recovery.
Now, following his recent hospitalization and AFib procedure, three of Richie’s upcoming concerts with Earth, Wind & Fire have been canceled.
According to PEOPLE, the affected performances are:
September 26 — San Francisco, California
September 30 — Chicago, Illinois
October 2 — Columbus, Ohio
Richie’s next scheduled performance is currently October 14 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
