A court in Austria has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of plotting a terrorist attack targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The planned attack was stopped before it could take place, but the threat led to the cancellation of Swift’s scheduled shows in the Austrian capital.
The man, identified under Austrian privacy laws as Beran A., admitted his involvement in the plot. Prosecutors said he planned to target concertgoers outside Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. Authorities arrested him in August 2024, shortly before the first of three planned concerts.
Investigators discovered bomb-making materials and evidence linking him to extremist activities. Officials said the attack was prevented after intelligence information helped authorities uncover the plan.
Because of the security threat, all three Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna were canceled. The decision disappointed nearly 200,000 fans who had planned to attend the shows, many of whom were traveling from different countries.
During the trial, Beran A. expressed remorse and apologized to the court. However, the jury found him guilty of multiple terrorism-related offenses and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
The case attracted international attention because of the popularity of Taylor Swift and the large number of people who were expected to attend the concerts. Authorities said the successful intervention likely prevented a major tragedy.
Following the cancellations in 2024, Swift spoke about how upsetting the situation had been. She said learning about the threat left her feeling fearful and saddened for the fans whose plans were disrupted.
The sentencing brings an important chapter of the case to a close. While the concerts never took place, the outcome serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures and international cooperation in protecting large public events.
